Toxic Lead in Turmeric

Post by emattson »

Large number of people in Bangladesh once suffered from high level of lead--women may have elevated lead levels as high as six time greater than those in Flint, Michigan during the peak of the water crisis. After extensive detective work, the researchers discovered that Bangladesh farmers sprinkled vibrant yellow pigment, used in industrial paint, on turmeric roots while polishing them to make them look more appetizing. The trouble is that the pigment is lead chromate. Thankfully, the chairman of the Bangladesh Food Safety took it very seriously and stopped the practice.

Spices have their uses in improving taste and making food healthy. I replace salt with spices on all my dishes. Always buy them from reputable sources. Certified by USDA Organic is one good source.
