Never purchase unwashed seeds. Packages labeled ‘raw,’ ‘unprocessed,’ or ‘unwashed’ probably contain enough morphine and other opiates on the outer surface of the poppy seed to cause severe addiction, overdose or death. A 2021 study coauthored by CSPI personnel found over 100 complaints to poison control centers between 2000 and 2018 from consuming unwashed poppy seeds, said CSPI scientist Eva Greenthal, one of the study’s authors.

Consuming properly washed poppy seeds is generally safe when used as food spices.
