Sanchin

Post by emattson »

During one of the discussions, we talked about the meaning of Sanchin. It's spiritual aspect is Mind, Body, and Spirit. It is also three gates: bottom part which is the legs and hips; middle part which is the torso; and upper part making the shoulders and head. A good Sanchin turn moves the entire body as a single unit.

I love doing sanchin a lot, it's so simple but it's so useful to help to learn a few things

1. Meditation on the mindset + intent + outcome (Buddhist philosophy on law of causation --> Intention > Ideas/thoughts > Action)
2. Stability + Motion
3. Hard + Soft
4. Health and longevity (Chinese culture is big on this that they want to live as long as possible... )
5. Distance + Force = Energy
6. Nei gong practice (practice of internal movement - efficient power delivery exercise)
7. Boring is good knowledge. Still hard to get (1, 2, 3, 4 above means need to do it more often)

Sanchin forms the foundation of all the other kata. People often commented that they can spend the rest of their lives improving sanchin stance and movement.

"Boring is good knowledge"

The westerners people like excitement, but we also appreciate a boring jet flight where nothing happens, the travel went smoothly, and the passengers were able to take it for granted. The adrenaline junkies often live a short life. My software tools tend to be plain, but stable.

Sanchin becomes more joyful when you find it in everything you do.

Nei gong, also worded as Neigong, is a Chinese training often translated as “internal skill.” It sounds advanced and obscure.

Perhaps other training or lifestyle changes may work better for self-improvement; you get less return for effort for more advanced training such as Nei gong?
