Female Teen weightlifting

Just wanted to add the minor detail that I agree with Bill on weight bearing exercise and osteoporosis--women need this (so do men). While cycles, swimming, elliptical won't help there, running will (of course it also adds a stress to joints--my knees and back say NO to running). Another threat for female athletes is unhealthy eating. This will happen more in the ballet etc arts than with weight training because you have to eat well to meet those weight goals, but anorexia or bulemia or sub-syndromal eating disorders will screw your bones up pretty good (and your electrolytes, your teeth, and so on). Hardcore body builders (as opposed to weight trainers) sometimes get into trouble with supplement overdose, dehydration / electrolyte problems from pre-show efforts to get "paper thin skin" including diuretic abuse. It's a weird world...
