I'm frankly pleasantly surprised that such a man was exposed. Back in the 1970s there were quite a few con men opening dojos in the United States. They didn't last long and some were challenged by local traditional artists who cared about their art. But certainly there were no television cameras taking them on.

My first karate instructor - born and raised in Japan and of the samurai class - took this sort of thing seriously. In the early 1970s he'd show up in such a dojo wearing a black leather coat and sunglasses, and one of his students (a W&M lineman) behind him. He'd go up to the instructor, poke his finger in his chest, and tell him he was a fraud. And given how scary good he was (and scary intense), nobody bothered to challenge back. I wouldn't recommend that approach, but... Pretty wild stuff.
