Remembering Julius Scott - Duluth

Hi everyone,

I studied Uechi-Ryu Karate with Julius Scott as my teacher on the Air Force Base in Duluth Minnesota. This would have been a period ending around 1970. I was the youngest member in the class at that time, only 11 years old. My dad was in the air force and we were stationed in Duluth.

I have many fond memories of that time and would be interested in sharing with anyone who was there, or who may have known him from elsewhere. Julius Scott was a great teacher, and a positive influence on my early life.

In doing searches on the internet, I believe I found the unfortunate news of his passing away in 2001. Can anyone confirm this? I was saddened to hear of this.

I have been posting some pictures to my facebook page of my time taking karate in Duluth, and if anyone is interested in seeing them, I will post links. Among other things we used to do was putting on exhibitions for cub scouts and other organizations in the Duluth area. And then we would always go out for pizza afterward. You just haven't lived unless you've shared a pepperoni pizza with Julius Scott.

Anyway, that's my story.

This is the best picture I have of myself with Julius Scott. I have more photos from that time (1970-1971) taking karate, but all of the photos are old and it takes a little time to restore them to some sort of viewable image.

I'm new on facebook so I hope that image can be seen by the public. If anyone knows where I can get a Uechi-Ryu Karate fist patch like the one in the above linked to photo, I'd very much like to get one, even if for no other reason than to have as a memento of those days. Mine was lost/stolen many years ago.

I am Sijo Art Lapham. My first instructor in the martial arts was Paul Botelho, a student of Julius Scott. I am trying to complete my family tree for the upcoming official website of the art that I teach, Raven Kenpo Ju-Jitsu and was wondering if you could tell me who Mr. Scott trained under? Hopefully you can help me in this and if you do have any photos of Mr. Scott, I would love to see them. THank you. Searched everywhere using Google and couldn't find much about his life story. He certainly has appreciative students.

Scott was stationed in Okinawa during the 1960s and studied karate there. Mason Bergeron, a Moose Lake native who graduated from Wrenshall High School in 1999 learned from Scott on Okinawa when Scott was in the 60s. Scott's sensei was known in Japanese as Sei-yu Shinjo. Sei-yu's father, Kanbun Uechi, founded Okinawan uechi-ryu. (Pine Journal; November 27, 2015) (Unfortunately, you need a subscription to view)

Sensei Nyblom started her Uechi-Ryu training in February of 1991 with Sensei Julius Scott.
