ART'S LESSON --

"The title is "Explosive Uechi-ryu" and the moderator is Arthur Rabesa. Art will be exploring the power contained in Uechi-ryu that is not appreciated by the average practitioner. Make no mistake - this forum is for the serious martial artist and I wholeheartedly recommend it for anyone who really wants to tap his or her explosive power potential.

That's an excellent drill, Art.

In my opinion it can also be useful in fending off 'nasty bites' at that range.

I mentioned the case I had in Brockton, where in my investigation of it, I met Lt. Gentile, who had had the tip of his nose completely bitten off, when closing with an opponent to make an arrest.

Any time you engage at that range, your opponent is apt to 'lunge in' between your hands/elbows and take your nose off your face.

I think it could be useful to simulate unexpected bites during the drill.

Bites do not get talked about much. Not a funny topic at all. There are plenty of guys out there that wouldn't think twice about chewing off a piece of the anatomy. This happens with grappling and ground fighting quite a bit. Next time you watch some UFC, check out their positions when grappling. You can see how easy it is to sink the teeth in. Difficult to actually keep from being bitten. Nasty.

Here's another look at the "InsideOutside" drill. I showed this at a seminar for Sensei Tracy Rose's Uechi school in Northborough Massachusetts. His student did fairly well considering he never saw this drill before. Students will pick it up quickly without any real instruction. That's why it is a good drill to throw at them. The partner you have tends to dictate the degree of difficulty here. Doing it with Maurice Soque 6th dan, is much harder. He hits back. No respect.

I'm bringing this lesson back again. To hit this way allows you to work comfortably in tight. It also enables you to counter an attack quite well. To strike off the front foot hard, is a strong weapon. It is not a natural movement though. It'll take an understanding of the mechanics involved. Using the striking mitts is a good beginning. You will hear me say , often, that this is not a jab. Many might see it that way. This is a powerful tight arcing strike. The fast snap at the end of the strike, plus the fast arc return will take practice. This can be done moving in or coming off a block or deflection. It can be delivered from many distances.Watch the hand position from start to impact. You'll notice that both hands are involved in the strike. i keep mentioning this as they practice. This is a head shot strike. Not something to use to the body. From the hand position, the head is sitting right there. Might as well introduce yourself. Other strikes roll easily off this. Something you want to be able to do well. -------Happy Trails ------Art

Re: ART'S LESSON --Wauke

Post by Art Rabesa »

One of the biggest signature moves in Uechi Ryu is the wauke block. Looked at - analyzed - debated - scrutinized. When performed by someone that doesn't really understand the mechanics, it can appear flowery. Because of the wauke's presence in much of the training, it takes on a cloudy understanding. When applied in the prearranged kumite's , it raises more questions. Because the wauke performed in kata is not the block you do when a real hard attack is on its way. There is kata and there is real. I will do a quick lesson video on how I perform, and teach the wauke. Coming soon. Happy Trails ----Art

Here is the power base drill I use every day. If you include this in your sanchin training it will give you an overall stronger sanchin. This drill lets you understand the power base. It is from this power base that you receive the explosiveness in your strikes. You do not need to do a ton of reps with this. I usually do between 10 or 15 reps per segment. Remember ---there are 3 stages to this drill. Check the video here. Have fun with this. It is a drill you really want to add to your overall workout.------Happy Trails ----Art

Lesson here is dedication-loyalty-longevity- perseverance-attitude-toughness. Bill Bauknecht's 8dan test at Uechi Ryu summer camp. This would be Bill's final promotional. We lost him shortly after this. Okay! Now tell me how tough you are.
From facebook video. I hope it hooks up here. -------Happy Trails -----Art

Re: ART'S LESSON --COMFORT CLOSE

Another look at working close. When you do this drill; I'd like you to let your hands dictate what you are doing. That simply means that you are feeling your partners movements and reacting to them. A very relaxed and safe drill. That is why it will be a fun drill to add to your class. A nice breather for the teacher because the students are on automatic pilot. Not much instruction needed. Working from one strike to the next based on what you are feeling from your partners movements.
Can be turned up for advanced students. Add grabbing and striking - pushing and pulling into strikes. Just feeling comfortable in tight. Move from this over to the heavy bag. Now work those same strikes on the bag. Move your hands on the heavy bag simulating what you did with your partner. Check the power hitting video lesson on the heavy bag here.
Infighting is about feeling comfortable close. This drill will get you there. Have fun with it. ----Happy Trails----Art

Attached to the lesson in the post above is this. When you are moving your hands in the "Inside-Outside" drill, you must be able to hit from super close. You can not seek distance to unload your strike. Your partner will not allow that. You must strike from where your hand is on the body. Not grabbing, pushing, pulling; or trying to get out of the tight position. You're in there and that is where you are going to do some damage. In order to do any damage, you have to be able to do what this video lesson is illustrating. This very close power hitting will not come easy. Stick with it until you can do it. It'll pay dividends eventually.

Bringing this lesson back. Please listen carefully to the explanation surrounding this very destructive strike. Probably does the most damage of any strike there is. Only practiced on the heavy bag please. You do not want this animal getting out of the barn.
