A wolf mentality

Post by Bill Glasheen »

I'm posting this article for a number of reasons.

First... You may think it's cool to own a dog known for fighting ability. But ownership of such carries tremendous responsibilities. Unless you have an understanding of the breed, an ablilty to train such an animal, control over environment, and a good insurance policy, then don't even think about it.

Second, it's interesting to note the conflict instincts of animals, and compare them to human behavior. While there are differences, there are also remarkable similarities. I'm always fascinated by how much dog-like behavior is seen in prison populations, where rules of civilized society don't hold the same power.

And finally... Don't be stupid. Watch over your kids!!

Police say Orange County boy fatally mauled by family dog

From NBC12 News
Monday, April 11, 2005

Investigators say they don't know what provoked a fatal attack on a four-year-old by his family's dog.

Orange County Sheriff CG Feldman says the child was attacked at about 5:00 pm Sunday in the Madison Run area just north of Gordonsville.

The Sheriff's Office says the boy was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not released details, including names.

Feldman said there was no record of previous attacks by the animal, a Rottweiler-shepherd mix. He says the boy ''had grown up with the dog.''

The sheriff says animal control officials took the dog, which will likely be destroyed.

In neighboring Spotsylvania County, 82-year-old Dorothy Sullivan and her small dog, Buttons, was killed last month by several pit bulls that roamed in her neighborhood. A grand jury indicted the dog owner on an involuntary manslaughter charge in connection with the fatal mauling.

K-9 officer says children should not be alone with big dogs

The K-9 Unit Commander with the Spotsylvania Sheriff's Office says this latest fatal dog mauling is an example of why large dogs should not be left alone with young children.

Sergeant Jim Bibbens says Rottweilers are pack dogs at heart. He says they use sight, touch, smell and body language and can misinterpret the actions of a child as being hostile.

Bibbens says even if the dog is part of a family, it ''still has a wolf mentality.''

Bibbens says there are many examples of family pets suddenly turning vicious. He says even highly trained police K-9 dogs are not left alone with children.

tragic but true...

And for those of you with small dogs and "big friendly" breeds (i.e., golden retrievers, St Bernards, etc.) the same warning applies. I never let the neighborhood kids play with our goldens without supervision for this very reason. Even if they don't do something agressive, a dog can still hurt or kill a child just by playing too rough.

And before you dismiss the small dogs (miniatures, dotsens, korgies, etc), keep in mind that these dogs tend to have "little person" complexes. Although a bite/nip from one of these tiny dogs seems innocent/harmless you should ask yourself "what if this dog were bigger?" or "what if I was smaller?" (i.e., infant). Frankly, I think the danger little dogs pose is underrated BECAUSE of their small stature.

Bottom line, as my childhood scout master used to say "You don't have to fear mother nature, but you should have a healthy respect for her."

cheers,

I used to have a neighbor that owned a pit bull, two rotts, a chow, and something that looked like a dingo. The idiot was just asking for trouble. People that stupid don't seem to care.
It is worth mentioning as well that dogs are almost always more aggresive in a pack environment, this goes even for breeds that have reputations for being gentle.

My younger but much larger brother is one of these types of people.
He is a big galoot with a bully kind of attitude towards most people except for me  .
He has American pit bulls. The female is vicious and the male is a little less so.
About 4:00 A.M. this morning I was awakened by a horrible sounding dog fight just outside my bedroom window. I have a couple of smaller dogs one being half blue heeler and half coyote. Strange animal 8O .
The female had broken her cable and attacked the other two dogs and the male pit decided to join her.
needless to say it all happened very fast. None were killed, only chewed a bit. The yote heeler sustained no injuries but inflicted some knarly wounds to both pits :D .
The other smaller dog got chewed up a bit and is stove up some but alive and moving around.
The pits are going to both removed today.
Just glad they weren't after my 2 small boys or my daughter.

Indeed you are lucky. And you brother is insane keeping animals like these, unless all you have is "country justice" out there.

Glad to hear both your dogs are fine.
Coyotes can breed with both domestic dogs and wolves. A dog-coyote mix is called a "coydog."

Can you possibly post a picture of your "Heeler Yote?" Sounds like a most interesting animal.

Yessir I'll be glad to post a pic or even several.
"Patches" as I call him is one strange animal.
He is very nice and playful but keeps that wild thang way about him, I love it.
He is probably the best dog I have ever owned.
Very smart and learns things amazingly fast
I'll get some pics for you asap.

BTW, the bull dogs are GONE!!! never to return.
Brother said he would never have another.
Good says I")
