To grade or not to grade
Also think of Dan testing as a rite of ‘passage’ following in the footsteps of the ones who have gone before us.
It is another way to establish and feel the link to our sensei we admire and respect. Think of how proud your sensei would feel to see one of his students elevated in accordance with established traditional protocol.
We can still view grading as a minimum of a standard to be met, and think as still being the individual’s responsibility to pursue experiences he thinks would make him a more complete martial artist based on his perception of what that means.
