terminology

Well, I find the terminology quite helpful. It only takes having a working knowledge of about 50 words and kanji (for the simple stuff anyway) to get some sense of the intended flavor of specific waza and kata. Every little bit helps http://www.xpres.net/~gmattson/ubbs/smile.gif Be well, Jigme -----...

The knife and throwing

Nope, I have been lucky enough to have never cut anyone but myself. While working as a chef, I took off the tip of my left index finger. Didn't panic, booted it down to the hospital, and waited for an hour to be seen. When the triage nurse removed my wrapping job, the finger started spurting (with e...

The knife and throwing

Hello again, Thank you for your response. In no particular order: Yup, I was serious about training with shaken soda cans. Taped to a training partner's body, it requires precise targeting (lest you slip and cut him/her), but also simulates the spray of blood from arterial cuts (don't do it with ora...

The knife and throwing

Hmm,

Maybe I don't get what you are describing, but it sounds like one could end-up with blood in the eyes (profoundly unpleasent) with these methods... do you guys train with shaken soda cans?

Be well,
Jigme

aikido or akijutsu

Wow, First, thank you all for the kind words! Vladimir- Gleason sensei trained with Yamaguchi sensei (a very talented individual indeed) in Japan for a number of years (and Sekiya sensei, so he also does Kashima Shinryu sword). There are a couple of Aikido clubs at MIT, but the one run by Stroub (sp...

Gonna be a bit of a jerk and argue some of this:
quote:
Originally posted by Bruise Lee [Snip] Aikido has little if any atemi (striking techniques) , whereas Aikijutsu has ALOT of atemi including some kicks. Aikido alters...

The Effectiveness of "Judo" Throws

Here is a nice wishy-washy response... It depends: If we take a koshi nage (for example), and apply it so that Uke lands on his hip, that is quite different than chucking him over onto his head. Also, the original syllabus for the Kodokan included atemi, kansetsu-waza and a whole bunch of other stuf...

Howdy all,

Mike-sensei and David-san are talking about the same waza: Kote Hineri (forearm twist) and Sankyo (third principle) Image!

Be well,

What does each style have to offer?

Mike sensei, First, I must say that I am not a student/practitioner of Daito-ryu. That being said, here on the East coast, there are a small number of legitimate members of Daito-ryu organizations (Roy Goldberg, shingen of Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu Kodokai is the one with which I am most familiar). From...
