Hokie pride?

Post by benzocaine »

It's about time Virginia Tech got rid of this thug.

I feel he should have been booted in 2004.. but he's special.. he's a star quarterback :x

http://www.wdbj7.com/Global/story.asp?S=4329480
In a statement on the Hokies sports website , University President Charles Steger says, "Virginia Tech quarterback Marcus Vick has been permanently dismissed from the Hokie football program due to a cumulative effect of legal infractions and unsportsmanlike play."

Said Coach Frank Beamer, "I'm very disappointed that this didn't have a better ending. We wanted what's best for this football team and Marcus. I certainly wish him the best."

Police in Hampton have also charged Marcus Vick with speeding and driving with a revoked or suspended driver's license. Authorities say Vick was stopped in the 700 block of Settler's Landing Road in Hampton between 2:00 and 3:00 o'clock the morning of December 17. According to court records, Vick was accused of going 38 miles per hour in a 25 mph zone.

Virginia Tech has called a news conference for 11 a.m. tomorrow to talk about the stomping incident involving Marcus Vick at the Gator Bowl.

The university issued a news release today saying that the news conference will be attended by VT President Charles Steger, Athletic Director Jim Weaver and Coach Frank Beamer.

The news release says the news conference will deal with the "on-field incident," and makes no mention of the new traffic charges that surfaced today against Vick in Hampton.

This is the latest in a list of troubles for the star quarterback.

In 2004, Vick pleaded no contest to one count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor stemming from a party at his apartment earlier in the year. He was sentenced to 30 days in jail, but that sentence was suspended. Vick also pleaded guilty in New Kent County to reckless driving and no contest to marijuana possession.

Virginia Tech suspended Vick for the 2004 fall semester because of all his run-ins with the law. He was allowed to return to the school and the team last spring.

Marcus Vick and Allen Iverson are two shining examples of what is good and bad about my home town of Hampton, Virginia. You have all this athletic talent in an economically and socially disadvantaged area. The end depends upon the beginning.

In the case of Iverson, the governor pardoned him from jail so he could attend Georgetown and make a basketball career for himself under Coach Thompson. IMO, he should have done ALL his time. His crime? Assault on a woman (in a melee) - with a chair.

I blame the parents. In the case of Iverson, I don't think he ever met his dad. Allen was conceived in the back of an automobile. (source: Sports Illustrated)

Not all kids who grow up in a disadvantaged setting turn out to be thugs. Michael Vick is a great kid and a model professional athlete.

Michael should have kicked his brother's butt years ago.

Marcus was given many second chances, and he let everyone down. But hey, these days you can market your "street cred" and make some money off of it. What a country!

I am a Hokie fan and say good riddance. He should have been tossed out of the game. If his brother does not step in quickly and knock some sense into him Marcus Vick will end up in the penal system, or worse.

It may already be too late.

At least in Henrico County, they'll put a mother with children in jail if she's driving with a suspended or revoked license. I don't know how they do things in Hampton but... Marcus already has a record. It doesn't look good.

Marcus needs some tough love. If he gets a few months in jail that might open his eyes. Hopefully no one will give him 'another chance'. If he keeps getting a free ride he will end up like Clarett from OSU... He was arrested a few days ago for armed robbery.

Vick arrested, accused of brandishing firearm
/ Associated Press
Posted: 48 minutes ago

SUFFOLK, Va. (AP) - Former Virginia Tech quarterback Marcus Vick, booted from the team last week for his behavior on and off the field, was charged Monday with pulling a gun on three teenagers during an altercation in a restaurant parking lot.

Vick surrendered at the Suffolk magistrate's office after three warrants were issued for his arrest Sunday, Magistrate Lisa Noel said.

Marcus Vick timeline
Sept. 2, 2003 — Suspended for one game by coach Frank Beamer for undisclosed reason.

Feb. 17, 2004 — Arrested without incident and charged with four misdemeanors - three for allegedly allowing the underage girls to have alcohol and one for allegedly having sex with a 15-year-old at a January party. Released on $2,500 bond.

May 14, 2004 — Convicted of three counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and sentenced to 30 days in jail and fined $2,250. Found innocent of having sex with the 15-year-old.

July 3, 2004 — Charged with reckless driving and possession of marijuana after a traffic stop about 25 miles east of Richmond at 2:30 a.m. Police said he was clocked at 86 mph, 21 mph above the speed limit, and that the vehicle stunk of marijuana.

July 6, 2004 — Indefinitely suspended from football team for off-field problems.

Aug. 3, 2004 — Suspended from the university for the 2004 season on same day he pleads guilty to reckless driving and no contest to marijuana possession in New Kent. Is fined $300, has driver's license suspended for 60 days and is placed in a first offender program on the marijuana charge, requiring that he perform 24 hours of community service, undergo drug counseling and random drug tests, and give up his driver's license for six months.

Sept. 13, 2004 — In plea deal, pleads no contest to one misdemeanor count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Receives 30-day suspended jail sentence, is fined $100, ordered to perform 24 hours of community service and stay away from the teenage girls.

Jan. 17, 2005 — Cleared to rejoin football team and re-enroll at Virginia Tech.

Oct. 1, 2005 — Leads No. 3 Hokies to 34-20 victory at West Virginia, and makes obscene gesture to fans who have been calling him names related to past problems throughout the game. He apologized a day later.

Dec. 17, 2005 — Pulled over by police in Hampton for driving 38 mph in a 25 mph zone and driving with a suspended license.

Jan. 2, 2006 — Leads Virginia Tech to a 35-24 win over Louisville in Gator Bowl. In the game, he stomped on the left calf of Cardinals All-American defensive end Elvis Dumervil, the NCAA sacks leader. Claims the incident was accidental and that he apologized to Dumervil, who denies ever receiving apology.

Jan. 6, 2006 — Is kicked off team at Virginia Tech for legal trouble and unsportsmanlike conduct in Gator Bowl.

Jan. 9, 2006 — Turns himself in to police, is charged with pulling a gun on three teenagers during an altercation in a restaurant parking lot.

The 21-year-old Vick was charged with three misdemeanor counts of brandishing a firearm, and was released on $10,000 bond.

Police said the parents of a 17-year-old boy reported that Vick pointed a weapon at their son and two others during an altercation at a McDonald's in Suffolk, a southeastern Virginia city where Vick's mother lives, Sunday night.

If convicted of all three counts, Vick could be sentenced to up to three years in jail and a $7,500 fine, police spokeswoman Lt. Debbie George said in a statement.

On Friday, Virginia Tech kicked Vick off the team, citing the cumulative effects of numerous legal problems and his unsportsmanlike conduct in the Gator Bowl, where he was caught on tape stomping on the left calf of Louisville All-American Elvis Dumervil.

He also received a speeding ticket and a ticket for driving on a suspended license in Hampton on Dec. 17 while under a "zero tolerance" policy from Virginia Tech.

The policy was implemented when Vick was suspended in 2004 because of several legal problems. He later came under further scrutiny because of replays of his actions against Dumervil.

Vick claimed it was accidental, but hurt his cause by claiming to have apologized to Dumervil, the NCAA sacks leader. Dumervil said he received no such apology.

Saturday, Vick announced he had decided to turn pro.

A Virginia Tech spokesman said university officials would have no comment on Vick's arrest.

"At this point, I think the actions speak for themselves," the spokesman, Larry Hincker, said.

Vick is the younger brother of Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick. He was the runner-up to Wake Forest's Chris Barclay, by one vote, as the Atlantic Coast Conference's offensive player of the year, and was the league's first-team quarterback.

In 24 career games, the 6-foot, 212-pound Vick threw for 2,868 yards, 19 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. He also ran 184 times for 492 yards and six TDs.

I was right on it appears...Only I expected a bit more time would pass before this flagrant of an offense.

In Richmond that would fall under the 'Project Exile' federal statutes and be an automatic 5 year vacation. Lets see what happens in Vick's home town.

Marcus Vick arrested
Richmond Times-Dispatch
Monday, January 9, 2006

SUFFOLK -- Virginia Tech's former star quarterback Marcus Vick, who was kicked off the football team Friday after a series of incidents, now faces misdemeanor charges of brandishing a firearm at three people outside a McDonald's.

Vick, 21, was "in the company of a young lady" Sunday night and apparently believed the three had made comments to her, Lt. Debbie George, Suffolk police spokeswoman, said yesterday.

George said police received a call at 9:04 p.m. from a parent of a 17-year-old boy who reported that a man had accosted her son and two adults in the suburban restaurant's parking lot.

Police interviewed witnesses and obtained warrants charging Vick with three counts of brandishing a firearm -- each a misdemeanor punishable by up to 12 months in jail and a $2,500 fine.

Vick turned himself in for arrest at the Suffolk magistrate's office yesterday about 2:30 p.m. and was released shortly afterward on $10,000 bond, George said.

Police provided no other details of the incident, including what type of weapon was allegedly involved.

Vick did not answer his cell phone, and a woman who answered the phone at Vick's mother's home in Suffolk hung up after a reporter identified himself. Vick's attorney, Larry Woodward of Virginia Beach, did not return a phone call to his office. The manager of the McDonald's and employees there declined to comment.

A spokesman for the Tech athletic department said there would be no comment on Vick's arrest. Tech "reserves the right to invoke judicial proceedings for off-campus actions. I can't say what the university will or will not do," said Larry Hincker, a university spokesman.

Vick was not expelled from Tech when he was dismissed from the football team and was in good academic standing at the time. Hincker said that although Vick has publicly expressed his intent to declare for the NFL draft, "We have no information yet to indicate that he is no longer enrolled."

The McDonald's incident came only two days after Tech President Charles Steger announced that Vick had been permanently dismissed from the football team after a two-year string of incidents on the field and off.

In May 2004, Vick was found guilty of three counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, for providing alcohol to three teenage girls at a party. He was sentenced to 30 days in jail but avoided that after an appeal.

On July 3, 2004, Vick was charged with possession of marijuana after being pulled over in his car on Interstate 64 in New Kent County for speeding -- driving 88 mph in a 65-mph zone. He pleaded no contest to the drug charge and received probation, but his driver's license was suspended and he was kicked out of Tech and off the football team for the season.

He returned to Tech in January 2005, under what school officials characterized as a last chance with zero tolerance for trouble, and won the starting quarterback job. He led Tech to an 11-2 record, including a victory over Louisville in the Gator Bowl, and won all-ACC honors.

But during the game, Vick stomped on the back of the knee of a prone and defenseless Louisville lineman. The referees did not see it, but the TV cameras did, and his act was broadcast and repeatedly replayed across the nation. Commentators and columnists condemned not only Vick but Tech for tolerating his behavior.

As Tech officials were trying to decide what to do with Vick, they learned for the first time that he had been pulled over by Hampton police Dec. 17 for speeding and driving with a suspended license. That proved the last straw.

ESPN Radio was having a lot of fun with this both last night and this morning.
When Coach Beamer told his players he wanted them to beat Miami, he didn't mean he wanted them to be Miami.
Last night while interviewing a WAVY TV (Norfolk, channel 10) sportscaster for over an hour, the ESPN team was in prime form. It was one-liner after one-liner.

This morning on Mike and Mike in the Morning, the listeners were asked to vote on the best quote of the day. One of them was a line from Marcus Vick after having been kicked off the Tech football team.
That's OK: I'll just bring my game up to the next level.
I wonder if he had his head down tieing his shoes when he made that statement... :P

We can't make this stuff up, folks. All I can say is Bring back Billy Beer! 8)

Vick's attorney, Larry Woodward of Virginia Beach, did not return a phone call to his office.
Yeah, he was too busy trying to figure out how to spend all of the cash Vick will be paying him.

So with Vick going "pro" who do you think will pick him up? Oakland, New Orleans, San Quentin Correctional Center?
I was dreaming of the past...
